These disorders are much more rare than the dyssomnias. Some of the most frequently-seen parasomnias are:

  • Sleepwalking & sleeptalking (sometimes occur as part of:)
  • REM Behavior Disorder (RBD)
    • Motor activity and/or talking during REM sleep
    • Usually involves acting out of dreams
  • Nightmare Disorder
    • Usually occurs during latter half of night, during REM sleep
    • Easily aroused from episode, readily recalls event
  • Sleep Terror Disorder
    • Occurs during first third of night, during deep sleep
    • Usually confused, difficult to console, unable to recall part of all of event
  • All of the above are diagnosed with a PSG, and are usually treated with medication
